Marka Ormsby is what we at The Walker School, where we first encountered her talents, call The People’s Techie. Both she and her sister and partner Robin are brilliant engineers and both are intuitive at teaching technology in a user-friendly manner, but Marka has the ability to imagine how confusing certain issues must sound to her ‘beginner-level’ clients and is already translating complex explanations into ‘plain-speak’ before their eyes begin to glaze over. This was her greatest gift at Walker and as a result, she often was called in to explain the intricate problem-solving accomplished by her sister. Robin usually reached about two-thirds of us tech-resistant teachers but Marka was always able to mop up the remaining clueless population and she did it in such a positive fashion that we left these sessions feeling empowered and confident.
I know whereof I speak with these ‘Tech Matters’ educator-techies because they also handle all my husband’s and my personal and business technology needs and their combined approach works for us every time. Robin’s keen interest in an educational approach to technology and Marka’s gentle ‘let’s look at it in another way for a moment’ remedial tutoring makes them an exceptionally dynamic team unlike any other tech support I have ever known.

The Marietta Center for Advanced Academics, MCAA, a 3rd-5th grade Magnet STEM school depends on technological resources to provide a challenging education at higher levels, and faster-paced, than most traditional elementary learning environments. To enhance teacher development in the use of Web 2.0 tools, the Principal, Dr. Karen Smits, knew that using the tools for authentic tasks would be most effective.

DECIDE

Tech Matters worked with Dr. Smits to decide the best tools to achieve her goals. A brainstorming session including mind mapping and goal setting helped identify wikis as the best Web 2.0 tool to use first. Although Wikis are not difficult to setup, thoughtful navigation design can make the tools much easier to use.

IMPLEMENT

Tech Matters worked with MCAA setting up the first wikis so that they could see how it was done. Dr Smits learned how the wiki worked but did not have to master wiki design before she could use the collaborative tools effectively.

Initially, MCAA thought they would need just one school-wide wiki. As the project unfolded, MCAA quickly realized that rather than one large school wiki, they would rather have an administrative wiki and separate department wikis. The Tech Matters process which combines coaching with consulting allows for such changes. MCAA rolled out their administrative and department wikis on time and under budget.

SUSTAIN

Introducing a new Web 2.0 tool to manage important information requires confidence that the information will be safe, and that users can get to it. Tech Matters provides tech support and backup services until MCAA is ready to manage the wikis independently.

They are extremely professional and knowledgeable, and have made a significant impact in reducing my workload and increasing the quality of the website. They recommend solutions to problems they see and have proactively started updating the website whenever the weekly email comes out. They took time to train me on how to set up a better system to manage the website changes with all members of the board of directors, which has significantly increased our efficiency as an organization. Thank you to Robin and Marka for making such a positive impact to our organization.” -Becky Rodzik, GEWN Marketing Chair
